Why We Need Your Help
Here
in northern Baltimore County we are fortunate to have many working
farms. And while we admire the beautiful rolling fields and picturesque
views, for the families who own them, they are businesses.
Most
businesses need to change over time to remain competitive and farming
is no different. Farmers face the challenge of making the most of
limited and fragile resources.
One such farm, Bellevale on Long
Green Road, has been in the Prigel family for over 100 years. Recently
the Prigels decided to build a small creamery so they could process
their own organic milk and make yogurt, ice cream, butter and cheese.
The
creamery will allow our community to enjoy fresh local produce, cuts
out the middleman and may be the key to enabling the next generation of
Prigels to keep farming.
Now, after completing construction with
full state, county and Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation
Foundation approval, the Prigels are facing a group of local home
owners who have initiated a costly legal battle to stop the creamery.
The
Prigels, forced to choose between giving in to a small but determined
opposition, or defending farming, have chosen to fight.
